Antique French Silver and Gold Leaf Louis Seize Mirror with Floral Garlands
About the Item
An impressive and rich decorated Louis XVI mirror that was made in Northern France in 1905.
The mirror frame was made of solid pine, has a segment arched top, and was decorated with cast ornaments. The ornate crest features many classical elements such as arrows, goblets, acanthus, C scrolls, flowers, and leaves. A beautiful floral garland completes the crest. The frame itself is decorated with tied ribbon and floral elements. A Classic pearl beading surrounds the authentic glass. The glass is a silver-nitrate silvered mirror plate with a facetted edge. The glass plate shows many small spots and the brushstrokes of the paint used to fixate the silvering shines through slightly. The Mirrorplate is dated 14-07-1905 on the back. The frame is partially silver leaf gilt with a black undercoat. Remnants of gold leaf and gold paint are visible as well. Originally the mirror had a gold color. The silver leaf was coated with a yellow patina to achieve a pale gold metallic color. Gold paint and gold leaf gave slight variations in gold-tone. The whole color finish with a variety of gold colors, gloss, and patina gave the frame more definition. The gold paint has been washed off and the mirror now has a more natural appearance.
