English Queen Anne Walnut Dressing "Toilet" Mirror, 18th Century, circa 1715

About the Item

This most striking dressing mirror, often referred to as a “Toilet Mirror”, is a rare and exceptional survivor from the first quarter of the 18th century. A finely crafted object in every sense, the primary surfaces have been richly dressed in burled walnut veneers, these match-booked in the centre drawer and along the top of the case, each drawer and the top outlined in herringbone inlay. The chest retains its original hardware throughout, the pulls easily allowing the hand dovetailed drawers to move in and out of the case; note the crisp and perfectly executed dovetailing with incredibly thin walnut secondary woods. The case is designed to be light while remaining incredibly strong and retains its original ogival feet, each with an exaggerated outward splay that is most attractive. For the serious collector of excellent English decorative objects, this is a most Fine piece that will surely be a cherished piece in any Georgian home. Materials: Walnut (veneer); pine (bottom of case, interior of case); walnut (drawer sides and bottoms); oak (back of case, triangular supports for rear feet, triangular corner blocks, mirror frame beneath walnut veneers) Further Reading: British Antique Furniture, John Andrews, p. 242-3; a discussion and photographs of several forms from the period Measurements: 8 1/4” D x 17 1/8” W x 22 1/4” H Condition report: Mirror glass replaced and board backing the mirror possibly a 19th century replacement. Veneer patches above middle keyhole escutcheon. Tiny veneer patch to back left corner, other veneer patches, tiny brads along front edge veneers. Applied walnut around glass with cracks and regluing. Original finials, handles flanking mirror and all drawer hardware original. Right drawer back has a 1” splice added with some very minor side losses (not pictured). Missing corner block inside front left foot. Feet appear to be entirely original, though with later nails and regluing evident.
