19th Century French Giltwood Louis XV Style Beveled Mirror, circa 1875

About the Item

A highly elaborate style of décor that developed under the reign of Louis XV (1715-1774), the Rococo style is identified by its lively elements inspired by nature. This French giltwood beveled mirror, hand-carved circa 1875, possesses such features, making it in the style of Louis XV. The roughly rectangular mirror has an arched top, with beveled edges on all sides. A thick quarter-round molding, set between two cavetto cornices, forms a near-continuous border, interrupted by voluminous carvings at the bottom corners and to a lesser extent at the crown. Both corners are enveloped by a gadrooned shell with a volute center that terminates in a curled leaf. The leaf has a vine-like tendril that climbs up the side, passing next to a flower that sits on top of the shell. At the top of the mirror is a luxurious crest consisting of a pierced curled leaf surrounded by volutes and a large flowering margent. All carvings are presented as asymmetrical and as they would appear in nature, however, their orientation is symmetrical, giving the mirror a balanced appearance; it is only upon close inspection that one can see the subtle nuances. At not quite 5 feet tall (58 ½ inches), our elegant giltwood Louis XV style beveled mirror would make a fantastic above any sideboard, console or fireplace mantel. It has also been professionally rigged in the back, allowing it to be hung on any wall in the house.
