19th Century Gilt Biedermeier Wall Mirror, Austria, circa 1830
About the Item
Amazing early 19th century gilt Biedermeier wall mirror out of Austria from circa 1830. This large antique mirror comes with an overlapped substructure made of spruce wood (you can see one of the wooden nails on picture 8) and a precious gold leaf covered surface. The frame impresses with its classicist design adorned by beautifully shaped applications in the corners and two additional narrow stucco stripes. Partially you can see the "Bolus" (red substratum for gilding) shining through, even the overlaps of the gold leaf technique are visible. The old mirror glass with facet cut is still the original one showing some charming aging spots. The hand forged ring on the backside makes wall mounting easy. A truly fine piece of an early 19th century wall mirror.
