Antique 19th Century French Oval Gold Leaf Gilt Louis Seize or Empire Mirror
About the Item
This beautiful large oval gold leaf gilt mirror was made in Northern France in the late 19th century, circa 1890. The mirror has a solid lime wood frame smoothened and enriched with plaster molds.
The most elevated part is decorated with laurel and a twisted rope pattern surrounds the outer edge and the glass. The frame is completely gold leaf gilt. The gilding was redone a few decades ago and it is in very good condition. The mirror is fitted with the original silver nitrate silvered glass plate. The mirror plate has a facetted edge and shows beautiful age-appropriate wear. This oval mirror with laurel and twisted rope patterns is typical for the Louis Seize or Empire style. The mirror was removed from the frame and the whole piece was gently cleaned. The glass was firmly reinserted and a protective pine back cladding was added. The mirror is now clean, solid, without damage, and ready for use.
