A terrific Dutch style frame from Holland circa 1860 featuring the distinctive mix of carved and ebonized wood offset with four panels of faux painted tortoise shell surrounding the antique mirror glass. Please notice the unusual three-dimensional quality of this frame that was originally designed to take advantage of the light produced by a blazing fire in the fireplace and candles burning in sconces and the chandelier. The forward thrusting and receding areas of the frame with their wavy ribbon-like surface decoration were all utilized to enhance the sculptural quality of this mirror and its frame.
