The elegant simplicity of this antique French Louis Philippe gold leaf mirror circa 1880 is accentuated by the gorgeous Régence style cartouche. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the lovely details of both the frame and cartouche. This particular mirror has a handsome rectangular shape with the lower corners being square while the upper left and right corners are gently rounded with the frame being the same size all the way around the entire mirror. The lovely aged gold leaf finish has a variegated pattern showing the passage of time in a fascinating manner. The vertical orientation of the cartouche is quite striking along with the way the variety of motifs are set in balance. Notice that there is a wonderful array of open pierce work in the cartouche that allows light to pass through the he cartouche and illuminate the wall behind the mirror. The centre of the cartouche is centered on a large oval motif known as a "boss". Highly polished with gold leaf the boss sits directly below the two flared flourishes set atop each other. Flanking the central section are lavish "C" scrolls enclosing a variety of open flowers along with an urn spilling forth a bouquet on the left and the right sides. This abundance extends fully from left to right across the top edge of the mirror and is notable for its ebullient expression of natural bounty. The cartouche also makes use of different colours from the brilliance of gold leaf to the richness of the rouge undercoat to a creamy white to highlight all the different themes used to express its beauty.
