Antique late 19th century French black and gold painted Chinoiserie Mirror

About the Item

This beautiful antique mirror was made in central France at the end of the 19th century, around 1890. The mirror features a convex-concave-shaped top. The frame is made of pine wood and smoothed with gesso. The frame has a black base color and is richly decorated with beautifully gold-painted scenes and designs. Along the bottom, there is a lovely painted floral garland. On both sides, a charming scene depicts a man and a woman in a garden. The arched top is adorned with typical French ornaments like acanthus leaves, scrolls, and roses with leaves. The gold decoration is painted on a slight elevation in the gesso, creating a subtle relief. The gold paint is a mix of gold powder and clear varnish. Over the years, the frame has developed a rich patina. The mirror glass is original and has a few small scratches and spots. Given its age, the glass is in very good condition. The glass was carefully removed from the frame in our workshop, gently cleaned, and then reinstalled. We also added a pine backing for support. The mirror is clean, sturdy, and ready for use.
