About the Item

A gorgeous Louis Philippe style antique French gold leaf frame surrounding the original mirror glass circa 1880. Please note both the beautiful proportion of width to height as well as the exceptional beauty of the original gold leaf that has worn through to reveal the luscious undercoat of red, known as the "rouge" coating that the gold leaf is applied onto and that gives the gold its sumptuous colouring. It is quite rare to see this combination in a frame along with the antique mirror glass. The frame has a raised convex section in the centre adorned with a subtle etched design of intertwined foliage that moves across all four sides of the frame. The slight difference in the surface reflection is lovely to see. In addition, there is a line of beading adjacent to the original mirror glass known in France as "les perles" for its resemblance to a strand of natural pearls. Until the invention of cultured pearls beautifully matched pearls were the most costly and rare items of jewelry and for centuries had been the province of the enormously wealthy. Using this motif in furnishings and architectural embellishment was a shorthand method of denoting wealth and taste and exclusivity. In this frame the beading serves to focus attention on the glass as well as highlight the contrast between the gold and red colours. The old mirror glass possesses that undefinable reflective quality that sets it apart from new glass and together with the frame makes a wonderful example of 19th century French excellence in craftmanship.
