About the Item

A Louis Philippe style gold leaf frame that encloses the original mirror glass from the Belle Epoque period in France circa 1890. This is a perfect example of the type of mirror and frame so popular in late nineteenth century France. The simplicity of the frame was enhanced by the application of a series of moulded surfaces that contrast handsomely with the smooth flat surfaces set between them. What is interesting to note in this frame is the broad central area of the frame is a raised convex section that has been adorned with a lovely etched design of foliage that breaks the surface of the gold leaf and captures the light in a distinctive manner. This section has an area on both sides that is recessed and smooth in texture where the gold surface is uninterrupted. The exterior edge of the frame is defined by a narrow border of organically shaped teardrops that follow the edge while always directing the eye toward the centre of the mirror glass. This subtle detail also captures the light in a way that produces a slight effect of light and dark that becomes more pronounced the lower the level of light in the room. To complete the trio of decorative motifs is the narrow border adjacent to the mirror glass that is a narrow stripe of beads surrounding the original antique mirror glass. The use of this motif connotes luxury and extravagance as the French refer to them as "les perles" because of the resemblance to a strand of naturally matched pearls. Before the invention of cultured pearls the acquisition of a strand of natural pearls was only the province of the extremely wealthy because of the extraordinary effort and expense necessary to find and collect them. This is why pearls were always featured prominently in portraits of the aristocracy. Perhaps one of the most famous paintings to feature a pearl is Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" made even more famous by the movie of the same name starring Scarlett Johansen and Colin Firth. The original glass has the characteristic smokiness and crazing seen on antique mirror that creates such an aura of mystery and allure. Using such a mirror in a contemporary interior adds a sense of depth and richness unachievable by a new mirror. This particular mirror and frame possess a marvelous balance between age and attractiveness and will be a decided complement to any interior.
