Pair of Ornamental Mirrors, Giltwood, Roccoco, 18th Century

About the Item

This type of works were only made for main houses, since their main use was to reflect the light of candles and lamps in these luxurious interiors, also showing the economic power of their owners. The method of making mirrors from sheets of glass was discovered in Venice in the sixteenth century, and was kept secret until about a century later, at which time the role of mercury in the process was known in London and Paris, allowing the expansion of these elements. However, the use of cornucopias did not extend through Europe until the Rococo, maintaining its use and creation ever since. From the beginning and, with the idea of showing the economic bonanza of its owner and help in the lighting, it was normal to get over after his size. The movement that the pieces present in the interior, where the mirror would go, provide a first clue to place it in an artistic style. As for its decoration, the plant elements, the tornapuntas, the curved forms contrasting with contracurvas and the avenerados details refer to the clear belonging of the two copies to the Rococo, differentiating them both from the examples of the XVIII century of greater neoclassical influence, as those of the XIX. The asymmetry that each of the cornucopias has in its decoration refers to the beginning of this style, given that, after a time, the contrasts of this artistic style were softened by placing the decoration in markedly symmetrical compositions." • Pair of Giltwood Mirrors with Porcelain, Rococo, 18th Century
    By Matthias Lock
    Located in Madrid, ES
Pair of "cornucopias" with mirrors, nearly identical (except for details in the leaves of the frames), carved and gilded wood. Inside, the main mirror has moldings that draw curves and straight areas, volutes and other elements. The elaborate decoration of the wall mirrors is based on grotesques in the lower part, from which plant elements emerge that are prolonged, accompanied by hangings, towards the upper part by the sides, with openwork details. Above, the crests have circular spaces, flanked by birds perched with its wings partly extended, and surrounded by elaborate frames that, like the rest of the pieces, have architectural elements (scrolls, smooth oval mirrors), plant elements and shapes that remind Rococo rockery. Clearly, the examples are included within the Rococo, counting, even with the slight asymmetry presented by the decorative motifs of the same and that slight difference between both examples. It is possible to find similarities in the design of these cornucopias with different engravings and works by Matthias Lock...
