Vintage Persia Glazed Ceramic Wall Mirror, Michael Andersen, 1960s

About the Item

Danish ceramic wall mirror decorated by hand and designed by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son in the 1960s. Solid, thick ceramic frame with navy blue and light grey persia crackle glaze hand painted in a graphic, stylized pattern with soft shapes. The shape of the back of the mirror makes it possible to hang it upright as well as sideways. Manufactured on the island of Bornholm in the late 1950s-early 1960s. The ceramic frame is in excellent vintage condition, the mirror shows small signs of its more than 65 years of age. Signed and stamped on the back. Persia glaze was created by Michael Andersen's son, Daniel Andersen, and awarded a Gold Medal at the World's Fair in Brussels in 1935. Marianne Starck (1937-2001) worked as the artistic director at Michael Andersen & Son on the Danish island of Bornholm from 1955 to the company's closure in 1993. During these decades her output of designs was vast and not very well cataloged. Her decorative motifs vary from abstract forms and geometric patterns to stylized animals and humans. Her work clearly reflects that she studied as a graphic designer in Hamburg, Germany, before she took her artistry to the ceramic scene in midcentury Denmark.
