Circa 1820 French Sleigh Bed and Chevet Side Table with Sycamore Inlay

About the Item

Dating to circa 1820, this beautiful sleigh bed and matching chevet side table were hand-carved during the French Restauration period. Both pieces have a wonderful spalted wood veneer (although the graining is more pronounced on the bed) that is a reddish brown with black graining. Additionally, they have a gold sycamore inlay of foliate rinceaux with Gothic rosettes, both of which are often seen on Restauration furniture. Every panel is also surrounded by a thin inlay border that adheres to the form of the wood, with the exception of the back sides, which were typically placed against the wall. The bed, known as a lit bateau, has high-rising end posts that terminate in scrolls, which is a hallmark of a sleigh bed. A custom mattress is needed to fit the interior, which is 73 x 44 (inches), and with the roller feet, it would make a fantastic addition to a guest or children’s bedroom. The chevet, which has a gray marble top with white veining, could be used as a nightstand in the same room, or it could be used as a side table in just about any room of the house, such as in the bathroom, hallway, or living room. There is a belt drawer and two small shelves behind the door, with the uppermost shelf having a dark gray marble top with cream inclusions.

Circa 1820 French Restauration Commode in Flame Mahogany, Gilt Bronze Hardware
Located in Dallas, TX
Topped by a one-inch thick marble top, this commode has a beautiful mahogany veneer with flame graining and foliate and floral gilt bronze hardware. Hand-carved in France, circa 1820, the stunning chest of drawers is from the Restauration period, which is the transitional era of French history following the first defeat of Napoleon. The gray marble top with white and black veining has a subtle embellishment often seen during the Restauration: rounded front corners. Directly underneath is a drawer with flared tulip molding (molding of Restauration furniture is almost always thin and delicate), with an elaborate rinceaux mount, adorned with a shell, palmettes, and a supple floral swag drop handle. The drawer is segmented into four compartments, allowing the storage of smaller items. Three tiers of taller drawers form the main body, each embellished with a volute leaf keyplate flanked by a pair of swag drop pulls. The apron is also adorned with a lovely bronze mount of a foliate margent with a center rosette that spans between a pair of half-bun feet in the front (the two back feet are blocked). A beautiful example of Restauration period furniture...

18th Century Italian Walnut Wood Pulpit Canopy
Located in Dallas, TX
This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding. Although our fascinating 18th century Italian walnut pulpit canopy was designed for a church pulpit...
