Portuguese Baroque Canopy Bed, 17th Century
About the Item
A 17th Century Baroque four-poster bed (ceiling), with headboard The headboard, decorated with boned shaped, shakes and strings, are turned into bobbin-shaped discs and balls in the sides and the legs of the bed. The columns are turned into balls, discs and wafers, with a metal spike at the top for fitting the metal parts and the wooden bars of the canopy frame and the pinnacles that finish them, feet turned into balls. The deeply carved bed shows the twists and turns and exquisite work of Portuguese artisans in the golden prospecting Era of the Portuguese empire. Piece applications: exquisite white silk covers or custom canopy for luxury bedroom.
Literature: Several similar examples of Portuguese beds with turned and carved decoration are illustrated in J.F. Da Silva, Nascimento, Leitos e Camilhas Portugueses, 1950, and also in the guide to the Museum-School of Portuguese Decorative Arts, 2001, pp.234 to 235.
