Great Pair of Gothic Revival Wooden Night Stands / Cabinets with Marble Tops

About the Item

Handcrafted and perfectly hand carved nightstands with white marble tops, circa 1870. If you are looking for a beautiful pair of practical night stands then this rare Gothic duo from the Victorian era could be gracing your bedroom soon. Mind you, this is a real pair, because the doors open in opposite directions. Very often two of the same antique night stands are offered as a pair when they are not really a pair. All handcrafted about 150 years ago and with wonderful materials only these were made for the very well to do, because this size and quality would have cost a small fortune. What makes this pair stand out from any set we have ever seen is the unique Gothic design. The church window-like carvings in both the drawers and the front sides, the Gothic church column-like middle section and the Gothic rosettes in the doors are the most remarkable and noticable. Apart from a few minor imperfections these cabinets are in excellent condition, both inside and out. They stand as strong and stabile as the day they were handcrafted, they both are (and always have been) free of woodworm, they have the most wonderful patina and the drawers and doors still open and shut perfectly as well. The inside of the drawers and the bottoms of these cabinets are made of solid oak. All other parts are solid mahonie with a marvellous patina. The doors open to variegated marble lined interiors and apart from one missing marble back plate, these interiors too are in superb condition. In image 19 and 20 you can see that these rare cabinets came with a unique bonus. When handling these cabinets we heard something moving inside one of them. By removing two nails, we found a secret compartment under the base of one of them and inside were some letters and what looks like a household booklet and also an antique family photo. Since one of the papers dates from 1936, this compartment may have been created at the beginning of World War II. We will send these hidden documents along with these cabinets.
