Beautiful 1902 “Book-lover’s Camden Edition” of Whitman’s work; in nearly perfect condition in original three-quarter vellum gilt and with scarce original dust jackets. Complete in ten volumes. One of 500 numbered sets. “The 1902 Complete Writings was a luxurious edition that served to memorialize Whitman and packaged his work in a form that clearly indicated (and argued for) his importance as a writer at a time when his status as one of America's great authors was anything but secure. Anyone looking at this edition of his work knew immediately that it looked like the work of a major author—it was a multi-volume set, bound handsomely, printed on fine paper, published by a well-known and reputable press (G. P. Putnam's Sons), and accompanied by scholarly apparatus. These were books making Whitman... “In addition to a three-volume ‘Deathbed’ edition of Leaves of Grass, the Complete Writings contained Whitman's major prose publications and a potpourri of other materials—Whitman's Civil War letters to his mother, his letters to Peter Doyle, an apparently random gathering of manuscript fragments, and some criticism about Whitman. Also included was the first attempt at a variorum edition of Leaves, beginning to track the thousands of changes Whitman made in the book over its six editions” (Walt Whitman Archive). The 1902 Complete Writings, issued simultaneously in several formats or “editions”, is the first full collection of Whitman’s work. Illustrated with a photogravure frontispiece for each volume and tissue-guarded full-page mounted photogravures throughout. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons. 1902. Thick octavo (6.25" x 9" in.), original publisher’s three-quarter vellum gilt over gray paper boards; original printed dust jackets. Ten volumes. Handsome bookplate of R. Mck. Duperu on front pastedown of each volume. Occasional minor fraying to dust jacket edges; a few spots of very minor wear. A nearly perfectly preserved set, without any of the spine-toning common with these volumes.
