Italian Red Grain Painted and Gilt Decorated Tall Case Clock, c1790
About the Item
This clock stands tall with original red grained paint and decorative gilt details. The works are early 18th century English with a calendar movement and are signed "Tanpium." The case has a beautiful dome shaped top and latticework sides. This clock case is from Italy and was made in the late 18th c to house the imported movement. The movement was also signed to appear like it was Italian made. A beautiful clock, with an unusual case. A spectacular working time piece.

The 7.5" W x 11" H arched painted metal face is signed "Rich'd Parfons, London" with Roman and Arabic numerals. The brass back plate is richly engraved and inscribed "No. 54 Goswell Street" beneath an engraved compote of fruit and surrounded by scrolling leaves. The clock chimes on the hour and on the half hour with a single chiming bell. It plays one of 6 tunes, of your choice, every 3 hours on a nest of 8 bells and 8 hammers on a pinned brass cylinder. The six dance tunes are; Cottillion, Jig, Minuet, Song, Air and Dance. The case has cast brass ormolu mounts including, a large carrying handle on the top with 4 pineapple finials as well as a conforming mount on the front of the stepped top. The front door has cast brass quarter frets on the top corners, the sides and back are glazed. It is raised on scrolling, foliate feet.
