Little Beaver by Frank O. Gehry for Edition Vitra Design Museum
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The story goes that architect Frank Gehry noticed a pile of corrugated cardboard outside his office, a material he preferred for his architectural models, and he began to glue laminated pieces together and carve them with a hand saw and pocket knife to create small cardboard sculptures. In 1972, he introduced a series of cardboard furniture under the name, "Easy Edges". In so doing he succeeded in transforming a waste product into a charismatic and charming piece of furniture with a perfectly unfinished look. Vitra...

Vitra Miniature Chair Art 41 Paimio by Alvar Aalto 1930s
Located in Atlanta, GA
Iconic miniature Paimio chair designed by Alvar Aalto, circa 1930, and edited by Vitra. Alvar Aalto designed the Paimio chair in 1932-33, which revolutionized both the aesthetics and technology of modern furniture design. The arms are constructed of layers of bent laminated birch while the Aalto Paimio chair seat is molded from a single piece of birch plywood. The profile of the Paimio chair is nothing less than striking. Although this chair is generally referred to as the "Paimio Chair", it was not produced specially for the sanitorium at Paimio as the name would indicate. It received its name because it was developed during the period when Alvar Aalto was working on the design of the sanitorium. Each Vitra miniature...

Vitra Miniature "Big Easy, Volume 2" Chair by Ron Arad, Germany, 1990
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A rare miniature version of the "Big Easy, Volume 2" chair designed by Ron Arad, produced and distributed by Vitra Design Museum in Germany in the 1990s. This miniature is a limited edition: only 250 pieces have been produced! It is made of high quality solid aluminium. This piece is made after an original model by One Off Ltd., London with the permission of Ron Arad. In 1988 and 1989, Arad's London One Off workshop created an entire series of Big Easy armchairs using bent sheet steel. The Big Easys were brought out as individual items or small limited series; they all had a striking basic form and inflated arms reminiscent of comics – but they differed in terms of the welding and color. This tiny replica is a beautiful piece of art to honour this piece of design history. It remains in very good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. In the course of time, roughly welded Big Easys went through changes, first becoming colorful lacquered chairs...

Vitra Miniature Lassu Chair by Alessandro Mendini, Germany, 1990
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A unique miniature of the Lassu' chair by Alessandro Mendini, manufactured by Vitra in Germany around 1990. This very rare piece is a limited edition: only 250 were made for Vitra's miniature collection. It is made of high quality bronze, giving it a beautiful style. This is a miniature version of the Lassu´ (which means (being / going) up there) chair, which is one of the objects for spirituality which Alessandro Mendini presented when calling for a guerilla war on the world of functionalism. The archetypal chair rests on a slanted pyramid, which makes it difficult to sit down on. But once you would sit on it, it would give you a new and different view of things. As a happening the original chair was placed in the middle of an open field, doused with gasoline and set on fire. The fire not only symbolized the act of liberation, but also the transitory nature of the object and its message. This tiny replica is a beautiful piece of art to honour this piece of design history. It remains in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. About the designer: Few people have been as instrumental in promoting avant-garde Italian design as Alessandro Mendini. The architect, designer, journalist, poet, and educator is best known for his holistic postmodern approach, freely combining elements from various cultures and time periods, while mixing the highbrow with kitsch. His acclaimed projects include the multicolored masterpiece that is the Groninger Museum and his iconic Proust chair...

Antique and Vintage Collectibles and Curiosities for Sale

Antique and vintage collectibles and curiosities can bring whimsy and wonder to any interior.

Decorating with old scientific instruments, historical memorabilia and vintage musical instruments, as well as other authentic collectibles and curiosities that can be found on 1stDibs, presents an opportunity to create a unique, natural history museum-like atmosphere in your home that can provoke conversation as often as it pays tribute to how far we’ve come in understanding our world.

And bringing collectibles and curiosities into your space is actually on trend — Wunderkammern, or curiosity cabinets, were all the rage in Europe during the 1500s and continued to have adherents there and in the U.S. in the following centuries. Today, however, they’re experiencing a real surge in popularity and influencing how many interior designers are furnishing and decorating homes — combining contemporary with antique, scientific with tribal, earthly with extraterrestrial, Les Lalanne tables with Flemish tapestries.

The original Wunderkammern were entire rooms filled with objects demonstrating their owners’ worldly knowledge: A proper one included artificiala or preciosa (objets d’art); naturalia (such as skeletons, shells, minerals); exotica (taxidermy or dried plants); and scientifica (scientific instruments), frequently alongside religious relics and ancient artifacts.

Pay tribute to a history of rich and diverse musical traditions that have taken shape all over the world by decorating your home with a collection of antique and vintage musical instruments — with a little help from strong hanging wire or some wall hooks, vintage brass instruments such as a gong, French horn or trumpet can help elevate a home office or complement the efforts you’ve made to ensure a welcoming vibe in your home’s entryway. Bells or antique wind instruments can add provocative metallic contrasts to dark woods as tabletop decorative objects.

Create an intriguing focal point with Georgian scientific instruments, such as stick barometers with mahogany cases or lacquered brass telescopes. These items stem from an era named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who ruled England in succession starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). Just as there was beautiful jewelry produced during the period that today is coveted by collectors, there is much to be found in the collectibles and curiosities realm too.

Wanderlust, nostalgia and a shared love of good design are contributing factors to certain trends in decorating — just as vintage trunks and luggage have reappeared as furniture or home accents in a bedroom or foyer, decorating with globes, maps or nautical objects is similarly rooted in the allure of travel and a penchant for the stylish finishing touch that collectibles bring to our homes.

Find a wide range of antique and vintage collectibles and curiosities on 1stDibs.
