Pair of Rare Grand Tour Models of the Marcus Aurelius Column and Solar Obelisk

About

Column of Marcus Aurelius - 22.5" Solar Obelisk - 21.5" Rome, c. 1850 Nero antico marble This handsome matched pair of Grand Tour models represent two of the most intact antique monuments in Rome - the Solar Obelisk, brought to Rome in the year 10 AD by Caesar Augustus to be used as the gnomen of his giant sundial in the Campus Martius, and the Column of Marcus Aurelius, depicting the story of his victorious Danubian wars. In 19th c. Rome, a group of stone carvers -scarpellini - arose who were expert in creating replicas of Rome's surviving monuments. Visitors on their Grand Tour were the primary customers. These replicas were made from antique stone brought to Rome dating from the Augustan age through the 2nd century, from the far reaches of the Roman Empire. This pair, made of nero antico (antique black) marble, is especially large, highly detailed, and in very good condition. The writing on their bases is filled with yellow paste.
