Jean-Gabriel Domergue's French Academician Sword
By Odette Domergue
Located in New Orleans, LA
This important and unique sword was presented to the famed French painter Jean-Gabriel Domergue to commemorate the painter's election to the illustrious Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1950. One of the highest honors bestowed on a French artist, the ceremonial induction into the French Academy has been accompanied by the presentation of a sword since the age of Napoléon. Rather than a weapon, the sword became part of the Academician's uniform, and, over time, its design came to represent the interests and aspirations of its recipient. This example was designed entirely by Domergue's wife Odette, a great sculptor in her own right, and thus it represents both a highly personal gift and an important art historical relic. The design of the sword is simply magnificent. Odette Domergue found her inspiration in antiquity, a theme that is also seen in the neoclassical sculptures that occupy the gardens of the couple's famous home, Villa Fiesole - also known as Villa Domergue - in Cannes. The impressive weapon boasts a solid gold handle that takes the form of a sinuous caryatid, who is nude save for a single swath of drapery. While the female figure recalls the sculpted supports prevalent in ancient Greek architecture, she also calls to mind the subjects for which Domergue was renowned - languorous, slightly risqué women with a seductive air. Other decorative elements such as fauna, cypresses, and grotesque heads enhance the whimsy and imagination of the incredible neoclassical design. Furthermore, the scabbard that contains the finely etched blade is also an impeccable work of art. Crafted of black Moroccan leather in imitation of the snake skin, it displays intricately engraved foliage patterns with a lion's head and Domergue's coat of arms. Though imagined by his wife, the sword was expertly chiseled by the celebrated goldsmith R. Delsinne and assembled by the atelier of the famed sculptor and medalist Raymond Delamarre...

Okitenugui Kabuto Samurai Helmet Shaped as a Head Towel Saika, Early Edo Period
Located in Milano, IT
Okitenugui kabuto Samurai helmet shaped as a head towel Saika, early Edo period, 17th century The Haruta armorers who moved to Kii province in the early 17th century, took the name from the village where they worked, Saika, near Wakayama, possibly on request of the local daimyo, Asano Yukinaga, a great armour amateur. Specialised in the construction of plate helmets, they produced mainly two typologies of kabuto: one with six plates covered with a chrysanthemum-shaped plate on top and one shaped as a “head towel”, called okitenugui. The latter type of kabuto employs very heavy plates crafted in a curved manner and was improved in order to make it resistant to firearms. This okitenugui kabuto features some distinctive decorations of the Haruta school, including the application of cut-out iron elements, including eyebrows, washers and lozenge-shaped decorations on the sides. The ring on the top, however, is a rare feature and could be used to hold a small war flag.

Japanese Sword, Katana Named “Yakumo”, NBTHK Jūyō Tōken, 14th Century
Located in Milano, IT
Katana named “Yakumo” (“Stratus clouds”) An important Bizen samurai sword by the Yoshioka Ichimonji school Late Kamakura Period, circa 1320 NBTHK Juyo Token Measures: Nagasa [length]: 67.3 cm Motohaba [bottom width]: 2.8 cm Sakihaba [top width]: 1.9 cm Sori [curvature]: 1.6 cm Sugata [configuration]: shinogi-zukuri, mitsu-mune, tori-zori curvature with chu-kissaki Kitae [forging pattern]: itame with prominent hada pattern covered in ji-nie. Distinctive midare utusuri Hamon [temper line]: choji and ko-choji midare in bright nioi deki mixed with tobari-ba Hataraki [activities]: ashi, yo and sunagashi Boshi [point temper line]: midare-komi with kaeri Horimono [carving]: bo-hi on both sides Nakago [tang]: 20.8 cm; o-suriage with slight kurijiri end, mumei, three mekugi-ana (one filled); kiri-yasurime [horizontal file marks] Sayagaki: The blade is in an old shirasaya. The scabbard bears an inscription by Honami Seizan (d. 1926) with the sword’s name Yakumo-maru, its length and the owner’s name, Gokaraku. Koshirae [mounts]: The sword is accompanied by a nice set of koshirae from the Edo period, with gold and shakudo kodogu and an iron tsuba from the Shimizu Higo school. Origami [certificate]: With a certificate of registration designating this blade as Juyo Token (Important Sword) issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), dated 2008 (54th Juyo session). The sword is massive and elegant, with a slender shape and well-balanced proportions. The jigane is a flowing itame, with a prominent hada pattern covered in ji-nie, showing a very strong midare utsuri. The midare hamon is in a birght nioi deki, with flamboyant choji and ko-choji which sometime shows undulations inside the temper-line, in a togari-like design. The nioiguchi is bright, all of which displays the excellence of workmanship in this one blade. Both the ji and ha are in the healthy condition of a masterpiece. The bo-hi carvings on both sides have been added probably during the Nanbokucho period, as they show the typical pointed end at the height of the yokote, which would allow the reconstruction of the point in case the sword was damaged in battle. The Ichimonji School was founded during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333) and was active through all the Nanbokucho (1333-1392). Considered one of the most important schools of production for the Japanese sword...
