A Rare Papua New Guinea Kukukuku 'Pineapple' Stone War Club, Eastern Highlands
About the Item
This rare antique Kukukuku (pronounced "cookah-cookah") war club is from the remote Morobe Province located within the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
The head is carved from a hardstone with rows of segmented protrusions, (one protrusion missing), then fitted over a tapering wooden shaft bound with woven rattan fibres, and secured by a spliced-in wedge.
(According to tribal lore, a missing protrusion is intentionally removed to indicate a kill).
The dimensions noted are those measured as illustrated.
PROVENANCE: Purchased by direct descent from the family of Dr. George P. Holland, noted Entomologist and former Director of The Entomology Research Institute at the Canadian Department of Agriculture.
Dr. Holland obtained this and other indigenous artefacts while on a 5 month scientific research expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1957.
In 1967 Dr. Holland was awarded the distinction of Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

- A Rare Anglo Indian Double Miniature Portrait Picture Frame, Circa 1890Located in Ottawa, OntarioThe freestanding cartouche-shaped tinned copper frame embossed overall with scrolling leafy vines surrounding a pair of open oval reserves flanked on either side by embossed motifs of lovebirds. The back showing a hinged easel support which allows the frame to be freestanding, and two top loading compartments intended to receive a pair of framed portrait miniatures which can then be viewed through the twin oval open reserves on the front. The rather naive albeit charming construction & decoration is consistent with items sold by street merchants in the various bazaars & marketplaces frequented by Western & European tourists travelling throughout India and The Middle East during the later part of the 19th century and early 20th century. There are surprisingly very few, if any similar examples of this frame currently available. This would most certainly be a unique addition to any collector of portrait miniatures, particularly those made by India Company School...Category
