About the Item

Presented is a signed color photograph of astronaut Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo XI Mission. In this NASA photograph, Aldrin, the lunar module pilot, walks on the surface of the Moon near the leg of the Lunar Module Eagle during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity. In the reflection of Aldrin’s hood, one can see Armstrong and the Eagle. The photograph is signed in blue felt tip, “We Came in Peace/Buzz Aldrin/ Apollo XI” at center right. Together, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin launched their first manned Mission to the Moon in the Columbia on July 16, 1969, with lunar touch down four days later. On July 20, American astronaut Neil Armstrong descended from the Lunar Landing module Eagle and stepped foot on the Moon. Nearly 240,000 miles from Earth, Armstrong spoke these words to more than a billion people listening at home: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Buzz Aldrin shortly followed nineteen minutes later and offered a simple but powerful description of the lunar surface: "magnificent desolation." Together, the two astronauts explored the surface for two and a half hours, collecting samples and taking photographs. They left behind an American flag, a patch honoring the fallen Apollo 1 crew, and a plaque on one of Eagle's legs that reads, "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind." While Armstrong and Aldrin were on the Moon’s surface, Michael Collins piloted the Columbia in the lunar orbit. Columbia swept behind the Moon and Collins became Earth's most distant solo traveller, separated from the rest of humanity by 250,000 miles of space and by the bulk of the Moon, which blocked all radio transmissions to and from Mission control. "I am now truly alone and absolutely alone from any known life. I am it," he wrote in his capsule. Once ready, Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the Eagle module, blasted off from the moon’s surface, and docked with Collins in the Columbia. The Mission lives on famously as the first successful manned Lunar landing in the history of the world. Condition: In very good condition. Official color NASA photograph of Buzz Aldrin.
