About the Item

The first Capell edition of the collected plays of WIlliam Shakespeare, a smart set. Complete in ten volumes. The first edition of Shakespeare's works to be edited by Edward Capell. Capell's edition appeared around a similar time to Samuel Johnson's eight volume edition which relied upon the previous Warburton edition. Edward Capell was appalled by the undisciplined emendations of Hamner and Warburton's editions and this set took him over twenty years. He spent time collecting and collating scarce quarto and folio editions. He is the first editor of Shakespeare to explore Shakespeare's use of Holinshed's Chronicles and Sir Thomas North's Parallel Lives. This set contains; Volume I: The Tempest, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Volume II: Measure for Measure, The Comedy of Errors, Much ado about Nothing, Love Labour's Lost. Volume III: A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, The Taming of the Shrew. Volume IV: All's Well that Ends Well, Twelfth Night, The Winter's Tale, Macbeth. Volume V: King John, Richard II, Henry IV Part I, Henry IV, Part II. Volume VI: Henry V, Henry VI Part I, Henry VI Part II, Henry VI Part III. Volume VII: Richard III, Henry VIII, Coriolanus. Volume VIII: Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Timon of Athens, Titus Andronicus. Volume IX: Troilus and Cressida, Cymbeline, King Lear. Volume X: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello. Two pages of adverts to the rear of Volume X. The title pages for Volumes II to X read as 'The Works of Shakespeare'. Separate pagination to each play, but continuous register. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. Bound without half-titles. Bookplate of Sarah Rooke to the front paste downs. In a full marbled calf binding, rebacked with the original board restored. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the extremities. A few light marks and a little rubbing to the boards. Spine label to Volumes IV and X are a little worn. Bookplate to the front paste downs, ink to the bookplate to Volume III. Front endpaper of Volume X has been removed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages. Overall: Very Good Indeed
