The Biltmore Estate, The Most Distinguished Private Place by John M. Bryan. New York: Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., 1994. First Edition hardcover with dust jacket. 157 pp. A book on the Vanderbilt mansion, The Biltmore. Thought of as the most ambitious private building project of the gilded age, The Biltmore was designed by the preeminent architect of the day, Richard Morris Hunt. It sits on 125,000 acres in Asheville, North Carolina. Fredrick Law Olmsted was commissioned to do the grounds, which were the first working model of a scientifically managed forest, which played a critical role in the creation of our national parks.
