Genealogies and Sketches of Some Old Families of VA and KY by BF Van Meter 1901

About the Item

Presenting an extremely rare first edition hardback copy of Genealogies and Sketches of Some Old Families Who have taken Prominent Part in the Development of Virginia and Kentucky, Especially, and Later of Many Other States of This Union, by Benjamin F. Van Meter, Louisville, John P. Morton & Company 1901. This rare book is in great condition for its age, with some very minor 'knicks' on the edges of the spine but otherwise pretty perfect. Brown jacket with gold lettering. As an added bonus ..... the Book comes with a Label belonging to it's original owner, Major William Alexander Obenchain, a Civil War personality who served on General Robert E. Lee's Staff, and after the War became President of Ogden College in Bowling Green, KY (now the University of Western Kentucky). The Book was presented to Major Obenchain by his Cousin and it is inscribed on the rear of the first page as follows:- " W.A. Obenchain From Cousin Charles J. Van Meter March 14, 1902." You will not find this book anywhere else!! What makes this book special is not only the fact, that it was owned by a prominent Civil War personality (Major W.A. Obenchain) but also that Major Obenchain was an extended relative of the Author (a Cousin). What makes this book really specialist that it contains both a correction or "ERRATA" entry by B.F. Van Meter (the Author) before the Preface and a number of corrections by Major Obenchain in relation to several entries and 4 Pages of Notes and Corrections by Major Obenchain after the end of the Book at Page 183. From our research, the University of Virginia has an original copy of this First Edition Book .... BUT ..... it does not have these corrections ..... making this book truly Historic from the point of view of a contemporaneous correction by an important family member of the Genealogy of the Families Concerned !!! If you are a member of the van meter family, A Kentucky or Virginia museum or university ..... Then this book is essential for your collection!!
