Gigi Cerca il Suo Berretto (Bruno Munari)
About the Item
First edition of Bruno Munari’s innovative and interactive children’s picture book with pastedowns (and pastedowns within pastedowns) that open to reveal additional images and details. Title translates to “Gigi Looks for His Hat: Where on Earth Did He Put It?” Published in 1945 by Arnoldo Mondadori Editori. Large 4to (9.5” x 12.75”), 10 unnumbered pages with color illustrations and text in Italian. Stiff illustrated cardboard covers backed in a strip of white cloth and saddle-stapled. Listed on the back of the rear cover as number 7 of 10 entries in I Libri Munari, it was actually the last of the series initially produced. Munari (1907-1998), a graphic designer for Mondadori at the time, designed the books for his 5-year old son. Encouraging children to touch was a revolutionary concept in Italy in the 1940’s but was just a point of departure for Munari, whose career-long engagement with notions of play and creativity fueled an output intended to stimulate the user—-child or adult—to participate in the act of creation or cognition. Scarce.

Bruno Munari
In his prolific career, Bruno Munari was known for various contributions to art, industrial design, film, architecture, art theory, and technology. Munari’s principles and beliefs were built upon his early involvement in the Futurist movement, which he joined at the age of 19 using the pseudonym “Bum.” During the 1930s, Munari began to move towards Constructivism, particularly with his kinetic sculptures, Useless Machines (begun 1933), meant to transform or complicate their surrounding environments. Throughout his career, Munari was captivated by both a sense of whimsy and the manipulation of artificial light. After World War II, Munari also developed radical innovation in graphics, typography, and book publishing, through the latter creating pieces he would call Useless Books.
