About the Item

Girlhood embroidery, American samplers and pictorial needlework 1650-1850 by Betty Ring. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1993. Stated first edition in two volumes hardcovers with slip case. 583 pp. A beautiful collector's edition by the leading needlework historian Betty Ring. It tells the illustrated history of Girlhood Embroidery. Young girls during this time period, who’s parents could afford it, were sent to 'young ladies academies' where needlework was an integral part of the curriculum. In a twelve-week term a young lady would usually complete a decorative sampler. The samplers were brought home, framed and hung as a proclamation of refinement, taste, and stature.
