Mills, Charles The History of Chivalry or Knighthood and Its Times London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Greene, 1826. 2 volumes, 8vo, 8 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches (210 x 137 mm). Vol. 1. xxvi + 415; Vol. 2, vi + 389 pp. Engraved frontispieces by A. Le Petit from a sketches by R. W. Sievier. Tan calf binding with gold fillets and blind tooling on covers, gilt tooling on board edges, 5 raised bands with gilt decorations on spine, red and black calf labels with gilt titles; marbled end papers and edges. Binding solid and square but edges and spine and corners somewhat rubbed and 3 x 10 mm scratch on front cover of Vol. 1. Pages are bright and supple with very occasional foxing and toning on the frontispiece. Armorial bookplate of Christopher Turnor, Stoke Rochford Library pasted inside front board of each volume. [BLL01002498779]. Christopher Turnor (1809 – 1886) whose armorial plate is found in these volumes, was an English Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1841 to 1847, and a promoter of Lincolnshire architecture. The rebuilding of the family's hall at North Stoke was commissioned to the Scottish architect William Burn in 1839 and the expansive Jacobean structure included a copious library. Today the Grade I listed Stoke Rochford Hall, is a hotel and conference center. Condition: Very good.
