About the Item

John Sloan's Oil Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonné, Volume I&II. Illustration's, description's and historie's of over 1200 oil paintings. 16pp. color plates and b&w illustrations throughout the catalogs. "Part of a circle of artists who studied under Robert Henri, John Sloan was a founding member of the Eight. Often referred to as the Ashcan School, for their straightforward depiction of gritty urban life, they were among the first American artists to challenge the traditional subjects and styles of art." John French Sloan (1871–1951) was an American painter and etcher. He is best known for his urban genre scenes and ability to capture the essence of neighborhood life in New York City, often observed through his Chelsea studio window. Sloan has been called the premier artist of the Ashcan School, and also a realist painter who embraced the principles of Socialism, though he himself disassociated his art from his politics. • Sarah Lucas: Exhibitions And Catalogue Raisonne 1989-2005 1st Edition 2005
    Located in London, GB
Yilmaz Dziewior, Kunstverein in Hamburg, Beatrix Ruf, Kunsthalle Zürich, Sadie Coles and Martin Prinzhorn, 2005Publisher: Hatje Cantz This monograph features an extensive overview of the unusual photographs, sculptures and installations by Sarah Lucas, which often appear raw and aggressive. In her works, the artist frequently unmasks the chauvinism of slang. Even though it might seem acceptable to describe a young woman as a "chick", Lucas's provocative work entitled Chicken Knickers, however, reveals hidden associations and, with true dry British humour, irrevocably strips the expression of any cuteness. Another significant element of Lucas's oeuvre are her androgynous self-portraits, in which the artists, with challenging gaze and a cigarette dangling from her lips, undermines the cool male pose she often adopts by using accessories...

  • William Nicholson: Catalogue Raisonne of the Oil Paintings (Book)
    Located in North Yorkshire, GB
By Patricia Reed William Nicholson (1872-1949) is among the most admired and elusive painters in the history of British art. Neither academic nor overtly modernist, his ravishing paintings are a singular achievement of the early twentieth century. Nicholson made his name as a graphic artist in the 1890s before turning to painting full-time. Over the next four decades he explored the genres of portraiture, landscape and still life with exceptional inventiveness, wit and technical skill. Yet his aversion to art groups and his reluctance to make public pronouncements about art have made it difficult to place his work within the main narratives of twentieth-century art history. The breadth of Nicholson's painting is revealed in this sumptuous book, the first fully illustrated catalogue raisonné of the oils. Many of Nicholson's pictures have not been recorded before and most are reproduced here for the first time. The catalogue, which represents more than twenty years of scholarship on the part of its author, Patricia Reed, includes detailed entries on all Nicholson's oil paintings and the most comprehensive chronology of his life to date. The art historian Wendy Baron gives a context for Nicholson in British art at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the painter and critic Merlin James...
