François Béroalde de Verville (1556 – 1626) was a French Renaissance novelist, poet and intellectual who was preoccupied with encyclopedic learning, the organization of knowledge and the difficulties of interpretation. This is his most famous work, a playful, chaotic, baroque, sometimes obscene book, first published around 1617. It is a parody of books of "table talk", of Rabelais and of Michel de Montaigne's "The Essays," in which a host of famous individuals debate, discuss and joke (with often coarse humor) about historical and philosophical matters. This is an early edition, probably around 1650-1670, but not dated. Brunet, in his 'Manuel du libraire et de l'amateur de livres,' describes an edition very similar but not identical to this, with similar irregular page numbering, and an early copy is also available for consultation online at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Rare-books division, RES-Y2-2788; identifier: ark:/12148/bpt6k6363210k.
