Life of George Washington by John Marshall, 2 Volume Set, 1835

The Life of George Washington by John Marshall, two volume set, second edition, 1836 Marshall, John, The Life of George Washington. Second edition, two volumes. Philadelphia: James Crissy, 1836. Original brown boards, housed in brown cloth slipcase. Presented is the two volume, second edition set of John Marshall’s biography of George Washington. The set was revised from its original edition by the author and printed out of Philadelphia by James Crissy in 1836. The set features original brown boards, black and white illustrations, and a facsimile signature from George Washington. John Marshall (1755-1835) was the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and an exceedingly influential politician. This book was the only book Marshall ever wrote and is based off of various original letters and documents given to Marshall by relatives of Washington. While the details of Washington’s life were accessible from these sources, Marshall also drew from his own personal experiences with Washington. Marshall served in the American Revolutionary War, fighting in major battles such as Germantown and Monmouth. He fought with General Washington’s troops from 1777-1778, where he became acquainted with Washington himself. Marshall was considered a friend to many founding fathers, and his status in the U.S. government allowed him to make impressionable changes to U.S. law throughout his years of service. In 1800, Marshall was requested by one of Washington’s relatives to compile a biography detailing the life of the United States’ first president. Marshall penned thousands of pages and upwards of 7,000 copies of the original biography were first printed and sold. The work was not simply an account of Washington’s life; rather, it described the status of the United States during that period in time, making it a significant piece of historic literature. Condition: This two volume set is bound in its original brown boards with raised bands along the spine. It features marbled endpapers and marble edges. The wear is consistent with age with scattered staining throughout. Both books are housed in a custom-built brown cloth slipcase, complete with a colorful portrait of Washington pasted to the side.
