During President Clinton's two presidential terms, Madeleine Albright (1937- 2022) was a major player in some of the most dramatic events of our time, from the pursuit of peace in the Middle East to NATO's humanitarian intervention in Kosovo. She served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1993-1997. President Clinton then nominated her to become the first female secretary of state and she served in that role from 1997-2001.
In this thoughtful memoir, she shares her remarkable story from her childhood as a Czechoslovakian refugee to her rise to power in the world of international diplomacy and policy-making. Albright details the intense behind-the-scenes diplomacy leading up to the 1999 war in Kosovo and outlines several lessons of the Kosovo conflict. Albright also discusses what it was like to be the first female secretary of state. Being a woman in a male-dominated field of foreign relations "has some downs, but mostly it has ups."
Madam Secretary offers a blend of Albright's thoughtful recollection and riveting insight on events that shaped our nation and our world.
