Noguchi 1931 50 51 52 Japan

About the Item

First edition monograph chronicling Noguchi’s formative and incredibly productive trips to Japan in the years 1930, 1950, 1951, and 1952 where he began the Akari series of bamboo and Washi paper lights, designed a now iconic though un-produced bamboo and iron chair in collaboration with Isamu Kenmochi, built interior landscapes for Tokyo’s Chuo Koron Gallery, outdoor landscapes for Tokyo’s Reader’s Digest Gardens, large outdoor sculptures in both stone and iron, designed a concrete bridge in Hiroshima, and hand-made a series of Haniwa-based terra cotta ceramics with assistance from Rosanjin Kitaoji. Of all the books covering Noguchi this one perhaps best exemplifies his unique synthesis of Eastern and Western influences, and best expresses his artistic vision in its graphic design and layout. 4to, 96 pages, hardcover with dust jacket, text in Japanese and English, fully illustrated in black and white. Published in 1953 by Bijutsu Shuppan-Sha of Tokyo, with Wittenborn as the American distributor. Introduction by Shuzo Takiguchi, Saburo Hasegawa and Isamu Noguchi, layout by Yusaki Kamekura, and photography by Ken Domon, Isamu Noguchi, Berenice Abbott, Manshichi Sakamoto, F.S. Lincoln, Jun MIki, and Rudi Burchart. Minor soiling to boards. Considerable chipping to dj, especially at joints and corners. Small open tears to spine ends. Notwithstanding, a lovely copy of this important work, scarce with the dust jacket and with the fragile tissue endpapers fully intact.
