About the Item

Defoe, Daniel. The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner, as related by Himself. London: Humphrey Milford, 1931. Embellished with plates after designs by Noel Pocock. Bound by Birdsall in half blue Moroccan leather and blue cloth boards, gilt ruled, with gilt titles and raised bands to the spine. New archival slipcase with inlaid illustration on front. Finely bound example of Daniel Defoe’s classic tale of adventure, The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner, as related by Himself. This edition was published in 1931 by the London based Humphrey Milford. The book is bound by Birdsall in half blue Moroccan leather and blue cloth boards, with gilt ruling, gilt titles, and raised bands to the spine. The book is further embellished with tipped plates, in color, after designs by Noel Pocock. The book was originally published in London in 1719. Defoe’s first long work of fiction, it introduced two of the most-enduring characters in English literature, Robinson Crusoe and Friday. Defoe based part of Robinson Crusoe on the real-life experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who lived on a remote island from 1704 to 1709, yet Defoe extended well beyond Selkirk’s story, weaving in tales of piracy, slavery, religion, adventure, and exploration. In his writing, Defoe blended the traditions of travel literature and adventure stories with fables, allegory, and even memoir, creating a writing style all his own. Robinson Crusoe was a popular success in Britain, and it went through four editions in the months after its first publication. Translations were quickly published on the European continent, and Defoe wrote a sequel, The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, that was also published that same year, in 1719. Condition: Very good condition. Octavo. Bound by Birdsall in half blue Moroccan leather and blue cloth boards, gilt ruled, with gilt titles and raised bands to the spine. Some sunning to spines. With tipped-in plates after designs by Noel Pocock. Past owner's bookplate. New archival cloth slipcase with inlaid illustration of Robinson Crusoe.

  • Frankenstein by Mary W. Shelley, Photoplay Grosset & Dunlap Edition, 1931
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Shelley, Mary. Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, [1931]. 8vo. Rebound in red 1/.4 leather and black cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt stamps, and gilt titles to spine. New matching archival slipcase. Presented is a photoplay edition of Mary Shelley’s masterpiece of horror, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus. This printing was published by Grosset & Dunlap, in New York, in 1931. One of the most collectible Grosset & Dunlap photoplay editions, this book was published to accompany the 1931 Universal Pictures James Whale horror film starring Boris Karlof, Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boless, and Dwight Frye. It is illustrated throughout with scenes from that production. The book has been beautifully rebound in striking ¼ red leather and black cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt stamps and tiles to the spine, and a matching black archival slipcase. Mary Shelley was just nineteen when she wrote her classic novel. The circumstances of its composition are by now well known. In 1816, Mary was in Switzerland with Percy Shelley, Byron, and Byron’s physician John Polidori when the evening’s discussion turned to one of Shelley’s favorite topics, the supernatural. Byron proposed that all members of the party write a romance or tale on the subject. The resulting efforts were Polidori’s The Vampyre, Byron’s unfinished narrative about a vampire, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The first edition of Frankenstein was published anonymously in London, 1818, and is exceedingly rare. An 1831 edition was published in London, for which Shelley wrote an introduction describing the circumstances surrounding the creation of the work. The first American edition was published in 1833. Frankenstein has been named “the most famous English horror novel… a defining model of the Gothic mode of fiction, and… the first genuine science fiction novel, the first significant rendering of the relations between mankind and science through an image of mankind’s dual nature appropriate to an age of science” (Clute and Nicholls, Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, 1099). Alexander Grosset and George T...

  • Rare Handcolored Map of Isle de Juan Fernandes 'Robinson Crusoe Island', Chili
    Located in Langweer, NL
Antique map titled 'Die Insel Iuan Fernandes in der Sudsee (..)'. This map depicts Robinson Crusoe, one of the Juan Fernández Islands. Robinson Crusoe Island, formerly known as Más a Tierra, is the second largest of the Juan Fernández Islands. From 1704 to 1709, the island was home to the marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk, who at least partially inspired novelist Daniel Defoe's fictional Robinson Crusoe in his 1719 novel, although the novel is explicitly set in the Caribbean. This was just one of several survival stories from the period of which Defoe would have been aware. To reflect the literary lore associated with the island and attract tourists, the Chilean government renamed the place Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. This map originates from a German edition of 'Voyage around the World...

One of the experimental novels of Virginia Woolf, following six narrators from childhood to adulthood through a series of soliloquies, ruminating on the concepts of individuality, self, and community. Eliot in the outsider Louis, Lytton Strachey in Neville, Mary Hutchinson in the socialite Jinny, Vanessa Bell, in the fleeing Susan, and Thoby Stephen in the flawed and never narrator Percival. Written by the Bloomsbury author Virginia Woolf, a central figure of the literary group, herself known for her experimental writings and affair with fellow author Vita Sackville-West.
