Stated First American Edition hardcover with dust jacket. 22 maps, 2 large folding maps and colored front and rear endpaper reproductions of sketch-maps by Rommel. "No commander in history has written an account of his campaigns to match the vividness and value of Rommel's." 2" D x 6" W x 8.5" H 2. Rommel in Normandy: Reminiscences by Friedrich Ruge. Presidio, San Rafael, California, 1979. Friedrich Ruge was Rommel's naval adviser, making him to be qualified to bring out the man behind the legend. In the months before the Normandy invasion the author accompanied Rommel on his tours of the French coast. He was a first-hand witness to the frustration and despair that frequently overcame German officers at the impossibility of the task imposed on them by Hitler's irrational optimism. Defeat was certain yet Rommel did his best to defend the coast against imminent invasion. Implicated in the assassination attempt against Hitler, Rommel was secretly murdered, then given the mockery of a state funeral.
