Heroes Monsters & Other Worlds from Russian Mythology Hardcover Book 1985 1st Ed

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

Heroes, Monsters and Other Worlds from Russian Mythology. by Warner, Elizabeth & Alexander Koshkin. Published by Schocken Books., New York., 1985. 1st printing, 1st edition. Illustrated in black, white and color by Alexander Koshkin. Important reference work. A beautifully illustrated anthology of stories and legends of the Russian people includes forty-three tales of gods and heroes, dragons and monsters, witches and wizards, giants and shape-changers, along with information on the sources of Russian folklore. An anthology of Russian mythology chronicles the legends and folklore of diverse regions of Russia, including epic tales of ancient gods and heroes, dragons and monsters, wonderful and mysterious adventures, and other imaginative sagas From School Library Journal Grade 6 Up Russian folklore receives the same somewhat sensationalized treatment as other books in this series. The fantastic elements found in Russian folklore, demons, wizards, and wondrous creatures have been emphasized over the equally prominent folk elements. Yet the tales are well-researched, based upon the original Russian story collections (Afanas'ev and Potebnya, among others) and are written in a readable style. Well-known characters such as Baba...

The Etruscans Hardcover Book by Mario Torelli 1st Ed. 2001 Rizzoli

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

The Etruscans Hardcover First Edition Oversized Collectible Book.May 4, 2001 by Mario Torelli (Author). The Etruscans have long been a rich source of research and intellectual inquiry as the most significant ethnic group who resided in ancient Etruria, current-day Tuscany and Umbria in Italy. A well-defined polity, the Etruscans were an advanced people whose presence on the Italian peninsula from the 8th to 4th century B.C. had an enormous impact on Roman culture, whose rise of power saw the collapse of Etruscan civilization. * Publisher ‏ : ‎ Rizzoli; First Edition (May 4, 2001) * Language ‏ : ‎ English * Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 672 pages * Dimensions ‏ : ‎9 x 2 x 12.25 inches This book is extensive in its scope; it traces the rise of the Etruscans at the end of the Bronze Age; examines the economic structure of the society; explores the emergence of a powerful aristocracy in the period from 750-650 B.C.; and considers the religious and cultural life of the group. This knowledge has largely been gleaned from a wealth of monuments and material culture which the Etruscans left behind including architecture (the various forms of which indicate familial structure and socio-economic standing, not to mention the larger social structure of Etruscan society) and applied arts, such as bronze objects for both ceremonial use and everyday life, which were produced by an artisan class for a wealthy and demanding aristocracy.Etruscan contributions to the history of art are also of immense importance and are explored in depth in this volume. Etruscan wall...

The Gernsheim Collection, Edited by Roy Flukinger, 1st Ed

The Gernsheim Collection, Edited by Roy Flukinger, 1st Ed

Located in valatie, NY

The Gernsheim Collection, Edited by Roy Flukinger. University of Texas Press, Sep 1, 2010. One of the most important collections of photography in the world. Amassed by the renowned husband-and-wife team of Helmut and Alison Gernsheim between 1945 and 1963, it contains an unparalleled range of images, beginning with the world's earliest-known photograph from nature, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. It includes some 35,000 major and representative photographs from the 19th and 20th c; a research library of some 3,600 books, journals, and published articles; about 250 autographed letters and manuscripts; and more than 200 pieces of early photographic equipment. Its encyclopedic scope—as well as the expertise and taste with which the Gernsheims built the collection—makes the Gernsheim Collection one of the world's premier resources for the study and appreciation of the development of photography. Published to coincide with a landmark exhibition staged by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, which owns the collection, this book presents masterpieces of the collection, along with lesser-known images of great historical significance. Arranged in chronological order, this selection effectively constitutes a visual history of photography from its beginnings to the mid-20th c. Each full-page image is accompanied by an extensive annotation in which Roy Flukinger describes the photograph's place in the evolution of photography and also within the Gernsheim Collection. Flukinger also provides an enlightening introduction in which he traces the Gernsheims' passionate careers as collectors and pioneering historians of photography, showing how their untiring efforts significantly contributed to the acceptance of photography as a fine art and as a field worthy of intellectual inquiry. Appreciations of the Gernsheim Collection by Alison Nordström and Mark Haworth...
