Yes, but... A Critical Study of Philip Guston - Dore Ashton - 1st Edition, 1976

About the Item

First Edition, published by Viking Press, New York, 1976. First celebrated as a leading member of the New York School, Philip Guston began his career in Nathanael West's Los Angeles, mastering murals, figurative painting & abstract expressionism before moving into a new kind of representational, Neo-expressionist art for which he is now best known. A controversial & savage commentator on the oppressive aspects of American society, Guston's work remains shocking to this day, and Dore Ashton provides a vital and brilliant analysis of his expansive career and the multitude of his influences, both literary and artistic. A fantastic and well-produced monograph shedding light on the dilemmas Guston and other American artists faced, and the ways they tried to provide answers. Hardback in publisher's original dust jacket, text in English, around 200 pages, illustrated in black and white throughout with some colour plates.
