First celebrated as a leading member of the New York School, Philip Guston began his career in Nathanael West's Los Angeles, mastering murals, figurative painting & abstract expressionism before moving into a new kind of representational, Neo-expressionist art for which he is now best known. A controversial & savage commentator on the oppressive aspects of American society, Guston's work remains shocking to this day, and Dore Ashton provides a vital and brilliant analysis of his expansive career and the multitude of his influences, both literary and artistic. A fantastic and well-produced monograph shedding light on the dilemmas Guston and other American artists faced, and the ways they tried to provide answers.
