About the Item

Set of 5 Books: Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, Lost Worlds, Middle Ages, Elizabethan World. New York: American Heritage Publishing Co. Ancient Rome: in an age when Latin has become rare and history before the Clinton era is befogged, this book serves a real purpose. It details the history of Rome (city and empire) from the Etruscan period through the republic, empire and founding of Constantinople to the fall under Romulus Augustulus. Lost Worlds: for over 5000 years men have left the record of their lives in what is known as history. Yet there have been many puzzling gaps. A number of major civilizations of the past with fully developed and creative societies, seemingly indestructible, somehow disintegrated or disappeared. Vague memories of some lingered through the centuries in myth and epic poetry, in tantalizing passages of the Old Testament. Others left enigmatic monuments- a temple wall, a pyramid- to hint forgotten glory. Still others were swallowed by the desert sands or the jungle forests. Nine of these civilizations are recreated. The recovery of these long-forgotten episodes in human history has been an astonishing adventure, which the author recounts with abundant scholarship and literary skill. Elizabethan World: no period has surpassed this period in adventure, intrigue and flamboyant heroism. Middle Ages: loaded with black & white and color photographs, sketches and artwork. Through a chronology of the era the knights of the First Crusade, the Life of the Nobles, work life, faith, ideologies and the artwork that the people of the time have left behind as their legacy. Ancient Greece: the achievements of the ancient Greeks form the foundation of modern Western civilization. This book traces the course of Greek history from the Minoan and Mycenaean kingdoms to the rival city-states of Athens and Sparta to Alexander the Great's empire and the rise of Rome. The vivid account celebrates the extraordinary legacy of Greek civilization: the epics of Homer; the seminal tragedies of Agamemnon, Euripides and Sophocles; the transforming philosophy of Plato and Aristotle; the architectural wonders of the Acropolis; and the birth of democracy. Here is an intelligent and remarkably handsome survey of ancient Greece, designed for anyone who would welcome the chance to learn more about the 1,500-year journey of this extraordinary civilization. Enough reading to last thru the coldest winter. NPT Books a division of N.P.
