Cupid Pendant, Gold, Stones, Enamel, 17th Century

About

The white human figurine is suspended in the air thanks to three gold chains, which are joined in a perforated ball decorated with red, white and black enamels, from which arises the ring from which the pendant would be hung around the neck. The iconographic attributes of the child provide their identity: wings, bow, quiver and arrows are the characteristic elements of a divinity of classical mythology. As a decorative detail, an amethyst pearl adorned with two flowers in quartz and enamels hangs from her right ankle. Cupid is the god of amorous desire and is called Eros in Greek mythology. He was a very common figure in the art of Roman Antiquity as well as in the Renaissance, Neoclassicism, etc. in all types of supports and mediums. They are the movement and the position that the figure presents what includes it within the Baroque and the XVII century. Few ancient jewels have been preserved, and even less with the same quality and state of preservation as the present piece. Due to the material in which they were made and the labour, very specialized, that required their creation, they were elements destined to the upper class, which used them only on special occasions. Likewise, it was common to sell or transform them once stylistic novelties emerged over the centuries. As if this were not enough, works of this type with a religious theme are more common in Spain than those with a pagan theme due to the influence of the Counter Reformation in the 17th century. Only some of the main private collections and certain important institutions have these kind of jewels: National Museum of Decorative Arts (Madrid), the Victoria And Albert Museum (London), the Louvre (Paris), etc. In the Lázaro Galdiano Museum (Madrid) another piece is preserved and exhibited with an angel, similar to this one (inventory 3207). Measures: 4 x4 x 13 cms.
