Marble Solitaire Game Hardwood Board 33 Agate Mineral Stone Marbles, circa 1930s
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very attractive complete game of Marble Solitaire with a hand turned hardwood board and 33 beautiful agate mineral stone marbles, probably French and all dating to the first half of the 20th century, circa 1930s. The circular hand turned board is made of hardwood, probably mahogany, with a very good grain figure. The board has 32 equi-spaced holes with an additional one in the centre and a gallery to the outer perimeter. The board has developed a nice soft color and patina from many years of use. It comes complete with a full set of 33 (32 Plus 1 spare) early handmade playing marbles. Early marbles are very collectable in their own right and the marbles in this set are nominally about 9/16 inches in diameter. They are made from agate or mineral stone with a mixture of some lovely colors. Popular in the court of Louis the XIV, the game was supposedly invented by a nobleman incarcerated in the Bastille in France during the 17th century and was popular in the court of Louis XIV. It is a challenging game for the fan of strategy and skill and became one of the more popular games of the last few 100 years. To play, place all 32 marbles with one hole left unoccupied in the middle of the board. The objective is simply to remove all but one of the marbles by jumping one marble over another, similar to the game of Draughts. The marble jumped is removed to the gallery around the side of the board. This is a particularly nice set, with a very good hand turned board and beautiful agate marbles!

Lever within an oval. The club head in great condition the face with punched dot face markings. The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face. A great golf club in good original condition and very usable for modern hickory play. Joshua Bird was a British golf professional, Hoylake Ladies Golf Club 1896 - 1897, Moreton Ladies Wirral 1900 - 1901, Farnworth & District Golf Club, Bolton 1902 - 15, Breightmet Golf Club, Bolton 1915 - 21, Great Lever & Farnworth Golf Club, Bolton 1923 - 26. The last image is a photo of Mr Hilton, amateur champion 1900-1901-1911-1913 at Great Lever and Farnworth Golf Club in 1902 (image taken from the Bolton News). Farnworth & District Golf Club was founded in 1901, being a 9-hole course. The professional course record was held by Joshua Bird with a score of 39, he was the club professional from 1902 until 1915. The railway station at Plodder Lane was 10 minutes away. In 1914 the club had a membership of 120 gents and 40 ladies and Sunday play was not allowed. The clubs final appearance in the Golfer's Handbook was in 1922 when the professional, now William Coates, held the revised course record with a strange score of 46. Following WW1 the club amalgamated with Great Lever, who also had their own 9-hole course, to form the Great Lever & Farnworth Golf Club. From The Bolton news:- Great Lever and Farnworth Golf Club was set up - in 1917 - but the two individual golf clubs had been started even earlier than this. Great Lever Golf Club officially opened on April 8, 1911. It had around 60 to 70 members at that time. Farnworth Golf Club house officially opened for business on October 3, 1908. At that time although women were welcome they were few and far between. The traditional women's clothing of the time was fairly prohibitive in terms of most sports and that includes golf but over the years that has clearly become no problem at all and most clubs boast a strong ladies' section. World War One arrived in 1914 bringing with it the lack of men and women to enjoy playing golf. Men were off fighting in France and the women were doing their bit here in Bolton, taking care of their families and working jobs the men had left behind, where possible. The last thing on their minds would be going out to play a game of golf and at this time membership at the Great Lever and Farnworth Golf Clubs dwindled. Even when the Great War was over the membership had suffered such a depletion that something needed to be done about it. It was agreed, at a meeting on February 21, 1917, that Great Lever Golf Club and nearby Farnworth Golf Club would amalgamate, explains Lady President Susan Lowe. It was at this point the golf club was named the Great Lever and Farnworth Golf Club, incorporating the two names and bringing together two memberships from nearby districts. "Many years later a new golf club house was officially opened on September 22, 1995 with access from Plodder Lane," explains Susan. This would now ensure both sets of members became one. Taken from Breightmet Golf Club Website:- In 1911 businessmen from the Red Bridge Dyeing Company and Messer's Twisses Dye Works got together with a Doctor, Lawyer and local Councillor to form the Club on farmland behind the Coach and Horses pub in Ainsworth. At this time the Clubhouse was an Elizabethan farmhouse at Smithfold, which still exists today. In 1914 the course moved to its present location on Red Lane...
