Jaques of London Chess Set Made for Joaquin Amarro
Located in New Orleans, LA
This important and unique chess set crafted by Jaques & Son Ltd. of London for the Mexican General Joaquin Amarro. Comprised of African ivory pieces carved in the universally-recognized Staunton design, a classically-styled inlaid rosewood table and matching timer, this extraordinary set was custom-made for Amarro and includes some very interesting attributes. Jaques created four extra knight pieces, all modeled after the general's horse, and also ensured that the opponent's side of the timer ran faster than his, giving the general quite the tactical advantage. Kings that reach over 5 inches in height, one inch taller than most Staunton kings, complete this unique commission. Later retailed at the famed Asprey of London, this set is truly one-of-a-kind.
The chess table is as remarkable as the chess pieces. Crafted of luxurious mahogany, the eight-legged piece features the board inlaid directly onto its surface, while brass pulls and etched ivory plaques representing each chess piece complete the thoughtful design. In addition, felt-lined drawers offer perfectly fitted slots for each piece. The timer is equally enchanting. Its form mirrors the table's edge, and its pegs are also carved of African ivory. The most important maker, provenance and extraordinary craftsmanship make this the finest chess set in the world.
Signed on Queens "Jaques London"; the table and timer feature Jaques & Son plaques
