39-Star American Flag, Hand-cut and Sewn, Antique "Unofficial" Flag, circa 1889

$18,000

About

This 39-star flag is an "unofficial" flag, as there was never an official flag order for 39 stars. This very large 39-star flag was fully hand-cut and sewn, as it was a homemade flag. The flag dates to the time when North Dakota, the 39th state, was given statehood in 1889. North Dakota became the 39th state to be admitted into the Union on November 2, 1889. There was a stretch of 12 years between the 38th state and the 39th state, and the maker of this flag clearly believed that the 39th state would be admitted as a single state. Since 1818, a star for each newly admitted state was added to the official flag on the 4th of July following the statehood day. However, in 1889 there were three states in addition to North Dakota to receive statehood; South Dakota, Montana, and Washington. By July 4th of 1890, the official star count on the flag was 43. This flag features a 7-6-7-6-7-6 star pattern on the canton. The stars are positioned at differing angles, making this pattern slightly whimsical. CONDITION: Overall very good condition; vibrant coloring, stitching in tact. Only very minor holes and stains visible on field. Stitched white bordering on fly end.
