Antique African Royal ceremonial buffalo drinking horn Bamum “Ndu Nyiet” This historic and spectacular Bamum royal drinking horn is known as “Ndu Nyiet”. It is carved, exquisitely, from buffalo horn and decorated overall in relief with geometric design of symbols and devices. On the narrow end of the horn is an expressive elephant head, cast in bronze, mounted. The artistically created piece has a rich dark brown age patina. This royal ceremonial drinking Horn originated in the Cameroon Grassfield region during the Bamum Kingdom. The buffalo is a royal emblem and the drinking Horn is highly prestigious. In the early 20th century the Babanki chiefdom and the Grassfield region was documented as a center of buffalo Horn carving. A very few buffalo drinking horns, similar to this, can be found in the Rockefeller collection at the Metropolitan Museum New York and the National Museum of African Art - Smithsonian Institution. It is an ethnographic rarity. Condition is very good. The horn is professionally mounted on a Lucite base. Measurements: L 12” x H 9” x D 5 ½” Weight: 2 lbs 8 oz.
