Superb Ancient Classical Greek Silver Tetradrachm Coin from Syracuse, 413 BC

About

An extremely rare masterpiece of Classical Greek art, from the Cabinet des Médailles, Paris, subsequently published in G.E. Rizzo's landmark study, Monete greche della Sicilia. Roma. 1946 and then in the famous Charles Gillet collection. A silver tetradrachm from Syracuse, circa 413-405 BC. The obverse with a four horse chariot, the horses shown mid-gallop, straining at the reins, the goddess of victory descending from the heavens to crown the charioteer with a laurel wreath. A ripe ear of barley below. The reverse with a magnificent head of Syracuse's water nymph, Arethusa. Floating in her fresh water spring, dolphins circling around, her hair bound in an elaborate headband, the loose locks flowing out from underneath and floating upwards, the band decorated with stars and zigzag borders. The inscription reading: Sypakosion "Of the Syracusans" This piece has a long and prestigious provenance and surely boasts one of the most exquisite images of Arethusa found on any Greek coin.
