Vintage Israeli Street Sign - "Rehov Yirméya" (Jeremiah Street), 1948

About the Item

his is an original enamel-on-iron street sign from Israel, dating to 1948. The sign bears the name "Rehov Yirméya" in both Hebrew (רחוב ירמיה) and its transliteration into Latin script. Such signs were commonly produced in the early years of the State of Israel, featuring a distinctive blue and white color scheme and simple yet durable enamel construction. The sign exhibits signs of age, including rust and minor wear, which adds to its historical authenticity and charm. About Jeremiah (Yirméya): The street is named after the biblical prophet Jeremiah (Yirmiyahu), one of the major prophets in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh). He lived in the 7th to 6th century BCE, during the final years of the Kingdom of Judah before the Babylonian conquest and the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. Jeremiah is best known for his prophetic warnings about the impending doom of Jerusalem, urging the people to repent and turn back to God. His messages, recorded in the Book of Jeremiah, depict the moral and spiritual decline of the nation and foretell the Babylonian exile. Often referred to as the "Weeping Prophet," he expressed deep sorrow for the fate of his people. Despite his grim prophecies, Jeremiah also spoke of hope, predicting the eventual restoration of Israel and a renewed covenant with God. His influence extends beyond Judaism, as he is also recognized in Christianity and Islam. His prophecies have been widely studied for their theological depth and historical significance. Many streets in Israel are named after Jeremiah, honoring his enduring legacy as a voice of warning, faith, and redemption.
