About the Item

Presented is a WWI-era U.S. navy recruitment poster, advertising the benefits of enlisting. A painting originally done by Arthur Beaumont adorns the center of the poster depicting four ships and one small boat afloat turbulent waters. Just above the picture in bold red block letters reads, “THE U.S. NAVY” and just below that in blue lettering continues “Offers Practical Training In Many Trades” / “Learn while traveling in the ‘School of the Nation’.” This simple, yet bold design caught the attention of young men looking to enrich their lives, serve their country, and travel the world. The central ship, sailing smoothly among the difficult waves is the U.S.S. Pennsylvania that was then the official Flagship of the U.S. Fleet. Typically, the flagship is the first, fastest, most heavily armed, and most well-known of the ships at the time. The Pennsylvania was no exception. Commissioned in June 1916, this super-dreadnought battleship was fiercely equipped with guns and exceptionally fast, however, the oil burning engine prohibited it from playing a major role in WWI. At the time, oil fuel was too difficult to get to allow for such long trips when the U.S. had many other coal-burning ships. Eventually, the Pennsylvania had its time in the spotlight when it transported President Woodrow Wilson to France to conduct peace negotiations. After the war, this impressive ship was used for training exercises off the coast of California and is unsurprisingly presented here as an imposing ship to encourage men to enlist in the powerful U.S. Navy. The artist, Arthur Beaumont, was one of the most celebrated marine artists of the period. Born in England, Beaumont travelled to Canada, California, France, and many more places before being given a position in the navy as “Artist of the Fleet.” Specializing in portraits and marine scenes, the artist preferred watercolor to any other medium. Beaumont’s paintings became wildly popular in the United States and were published in the Washington Post and the New York Times Beaumont even received the approval of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The artist stressed the importance of accuracy in his work, noting that he had, “a whole Navy full of critics to contend with, men who are ready to jump down my throat if I miss a detail on a ship they’ve sailed. Accuracy is very important!” Beaumont’s heroic, dramatic, and exciting scenes in posters such as this leave his audience with a promise of future careers, higher education, and world travel.
