A 18th Century Louis XVI French gold-gilt barometer circa 1780. This early instrument of meteorology was used to measure atmospheric pressure and air temperature. The barometer is adorned with hand carved details; a large bow, flowers, a flaming heart, laurel leaves and scrolls. The dial face is hand-painted and has been repaired over time. Venus is beautifully depicted leaning on a classical column, two entwined hearts in her left hand. The column is of French porcelain in the Sèvres style. To the right of the column, a most charming allegory of loyalty, a young putto playing with a small dog.
