18th Century Carved Wood Altar Model with Original Painting Crucifixion Germany

About the Item

A rare and finely executed altar model, South Germany, circa 1790, conceived as a miniature architectural study for a church high altar, complete with its original painted decoration throughout. The model is built as a tripartite architectural composition: a central aedicule framed by twin pairs of engaged columns on paneled pedestals, each outer pair crowned by a gilt urn-form finial. Within the central niche stands a painted figure of the crucified Christ against a dark ground, set below an arched pediment enclosing a painted panel of God the Father, flanked by scrolling volutes in the late Baroque manner. The architectural elements retain their original faux-marble painted surface with gilt highlighting to the capitals, mouldings, and ornament, giving the model the full decorative vocabulary of a completed high altar in miniature. Such presentation models were produced by South German workshops to give patrons and church commissions a three-dimensional preview of a proposed altar before its execution at full scale — few survive today with their painted decoration this well preserved. This example is thought to be a possible model for the high altar of the Catholic church of St. Agatha in Ingstetten, near Roggenburg, not far from Ulm. A superb, museum-quality survival of South German ecclesiastical design, of great interest both as a work of art in its own right and as a document of period church-building practice.
