“Calypso” Modular Stereo System by Nrowni, Italy/Japan 1970s

A rare and highly sculptural “Calypso” modular stereo system by Browni, produced during the 1970s and embodying the bold futuristic aesthetic of the space-age design movement. The set consists of a central audio unit flanked by two matching speakers, each elevated on integrated circular pedestal bases that reinforce the system’s architectural and minimalist character. Executed in glossy white molded plastic with contrasting smoked acrylic and black textile speaker grilles, the composition displays the sleek geometric forms and technological optimism characteristic of late modernist Italian electronics design. The central console incorporates a radio receiver, integrated clock display, tuning controls, tone adjustment sliders, and an 8-track tape player, combining functionality with a strong visual identity. The softened rectangular volumes and modular arrangement give the piece an almost sculptural presence, reflecting the influence of futuristic interior design trends of the 1970s. Designed not merely as an appliance but as a decorative object, the system exemplifies the era’s merging of consumer electronics and avant-garde industrial design. Light scratches and surface marks visible to the acrylic front panel and plastic housings. The textile speaker covers remain well preserved overall.
