Steinway Piano Made for the Olympic & Titanic Liners Carved Walnut Gold Leaf

About the Item

Rebuilt, 1912, Steinway Vertegrand upright piano with a quartered walnut case in Louis XVI style. Cabinet features ornate, carvings highlighted with gold leaf. The center panel features an oval edged with beading. It is adorned with swagged bellflowers and a central cartouche. The square side panels also feature a gold beaded surround with a vertical bellflower chain. Carved rolling waves in a scrolling design adorn the top. The pilasters features gold interlocking strapwork with a floral rosette. Piano has spiral, fluted Sheraton legs carved with waves and acanthus leaves, highlighted with gold. Piano has an eighty-eight note keyboard and two pedals. Piano was commissioned for the RMS Olympic Liner, sister to the Titanic. Steinway Records show the piano left the Hamburg factory unfinished and was sent to the London branch where it was decorated by Harland & Wolff's interior decoration company, Aldam Heaton. It was then sent to the Olympic. Aldam Heaton & Co 28 - 29 Baker Street was the interior designer on the Olympic. Heaton established a partnership with Richard Norman Shaw and was part of William Morris' circle. He also edited four volumes on 18th-century furniture. RMS Olympic was a British ocean liner and the lead ship of the White Star Line's trio of Olympic-class liners alongside Titanic and Britannic. Olympic had a career spanning 24 years from 1911 to 1935. Olympic was the largest ocean liner in the world between 1910-13. Olympic was designed as a luxury ship. Titanic's passenger facilities, fittings, deck plans and technical facilities were largely identical to Olympic, although with some small variations. The first-class passengers enjoyed luxurious cabins, and some were equipped with private bathrooms. First-class passengers could have meals in the ship's large and luxurious dining saloon or in the more intimate a La Carte Restaurant. This piano was situated in the 1st Class, a la carte restaurant on the RMS Olympic Liner. Instrument has been rebuilt using 100% Steinway parts.
